Tip: when a friend calls up a says ‘I have an idea’ … always listen … you never know where you are going to end up. When that call comes from Kristen Jensen (of ninebeanrowsbooks.com fame) you know it is going to be fun. This one particular call led to the multi-award winning Blasta series of cookery books. Kristin wanted to change the way that cookbooks are published to enable a more diverse set of authors come to the table. The Blasta Series was born, physically smaller but with no less attention to detail and quality than a traditional cookery book. Hardcover, small format and illustrated by Dublin artist Nicky Hooper, the cookbooks are released as a quarterly periodical series. Each volume is a standalone 72-page A5 cookbook, but as a collectible series they will also provide a more inclusive snapshot of Ireland’s modern and diverse food culture, from tacos to tapas, spice bags to sushi, with more on the way. They are little books with big voices.
